Canada's Largest Operating Battery Storage Facility Launched

HAGERSVILLE, Ontario, Feb. 27, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Boralex Inc. (“Boralex”) (TSX: BLX) and Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation (SNGRDC) announce the commercial commissioning of the Hagersville Battery Energy Storage Park, the largest operating battery energy storage facility in Canada. With a capacity of 300 MW / 1,200 MWh, the landmark project represents a significant milestone in Ontario’s energy transition and positions SNGRDC and Boralex as leaders in large-scale storage solutions.

Boralex Inc., a leader in renewable energy generation, has successfully partnered with the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation to commission Canada's largest operating battery storage facility. This groundbreaking project reflects a significant advancement in the field of energy storage and renewable energy integration in Canada.

The initiative is designed to support the growing demand for renewable energy solutions while ensuring grid stability. With the increasing reliance on intermittent energy sources such as wind and solar, effective energy storage becomes crucial to balance supply and demand. Boralex’s state-of-the-art battery storage facility, strategically located, will play a vital role in enhancing energy resilience in the region.

Located in the heart of Ontario, the new facility is expected to store large amounts of energy generated from renewable sources. This stored energy can then be redistributed back to the grid during peak usage times, helping to prevent outages and maintain a consistent energy supply. The project was made possible through extensive collaboration and investment from both Boralex and the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation, showcasing a model for successful partnerships in the renewable energy sector.

In addition to increasing energy reliability, the facility is anticipated to create jobs and stimulate economic growth within the Six Nations community. As part of the project, workforce development programs will be implemented to ensure that local residents can participate in the operation and management of the facility. This engagement not only provides employment opportunities but also empowers the community to take an active role in local energy initiatives.

The successful commissioning of this battery storage facility marks a significant milestone for Canada’s energy landscape. It highlights the potential of battery storage technologies to aid in the transition towards a more sustainable energy future. With further developments anticipated in the coming years, the joint venture sets a precedent for future collaborations aimed at promoting clean energy solutions across the country.

Moreover, this project has received considerable attention as governments and businesses seek to accelerate their commitments to net-zero emissions. By investing in innovative technologies like battery storage, stakeholders are reinforcing their dedication to sustainability while providing reliable energy sources for communities.

As the renewable energy market continues to expand, the collaboration between Boralex and the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation will serve as a benchmark for future projects. This facility not only stands as a testament to what can be achieved when diverse interests come together for a common goal, but it also underscores the importance of clean energy in addressing global climate challenges.
