Midland and Rio Tinto Discover Lithium and Cesium Pegmatites in Quebec
MONTREAL, Jan. 08, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Midland Exploration Inc. (“Midland”) (TSX-V: MD), in partnership with Rio Tinto Exploration Canada Inc. (“RTEC”), is pleased to announce the results of the 2025 drilling campaign for lithium on the Galinée project. The Galinée project is located approximately 5 kilometres east of the Adina lithium deposit held by Winsome Resources (“Winsome”) and is subject to an option agreement signed with RTEC in June 2023 (see press release by Midland dated June 14, 2023) and amended in April 2024 (see press release by Midland dated April 23, 2024).
Midland Exploration Inc., in collaboration with Rio Tinto Exploration Canada, has made a significant breakthrough in their ongoing drilling program at the Galinée Project, located in Quebec, Canada. During the 2025 drilling program, the teams successfully intersected new lithium- and cesium-bearing pegmatites, which are geological formations rich in these valuable minerals that are essential for modern technology, including batteries and electronics.
The discovery of these pegmatites has substantial implications for the growing lithium market, driven by the increasing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy storage solutions. Lithium is a critical component in the production of lithium-ion batteries, making it a highly sought-after resource. Similarly, cesium, which is less common but equally important, finds its applications in various sectors, including medical imaging and the manufacturing of special glasses.
Midland’s strategic partnership with Rio Tinto, one of the world’s largest mining and metals companies, enhances the project’s potential. Rio Tinto’s extensive experience and vast resources lend additional credibility and capability to the exploration phase of the Galinée Project. This collaboration ensures a thorough and scientifically driven approach to mineral discovery, reducing risks, and maximizing the likelihood of economic feasibility.
During the drilling program, the teams utilized advanced methods to analyze the geological characteristics of the pegmatites, focusing on the concentrations of lithium and cesium within the samples collected. Initial results are encouraging, showing promising grades that could lead to further exploration and eventual extraction. The findings underscore the geological potential of the area, which has not been extensively explored in the past for these specific minerals, creating an opportunity for Midland to position itself as a key player in the resource sector.
The overall outlook for lithium and cesium remains positive due to the global push towards sustainable energy solutions. Several countries are moving towards policies supporting greener technologies, which include electric vehicles and energy-efficient appliances. As demand continues to rise, discoveries like those at the Galinée Project become increasingly crucial. Investors and stakeholders will keenly observe the ongoing developments, as Midland’s success could open new avenues for significant mineral extraction and contribute to the regional economy.
Overall, the collaboration and discoveries at the Galinée Project exemplify the importance of strategic partnerships in the resource development sector. Furthermore, with an emphasis on sustainable practices and responsible mining, Midwest and Rio Tinto aim to address the challenges associated with extracting these vital minerals while ensuring environmental responsibility.
